Organic geochemistry traces the fate of organic matter in the different compartments of the geosphere. It deals with the transformation of the remnants of decayed organisms by microorganisms and geochemical reactions down to the formation of crude oil and natural gas in deeply buried sedimentary rocks. Organic geochemistry is a multidisciplinary science combining aspects of analytical organic chemistry and natural product chemistry with those of sedimentology, oceanography and petroleum geology.
